Pediatrics

Main:
Compounding a pediatric medication allows for control over many of the things that typically make pediatric pharmacy difficult. Many pediatric medications will be difficult to administer due to the taste, texture, size, or dosage form, so having control over these aspects can give the pediatrician assurance that the medication is being accurately administered.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder:
ADHD medications are being more frequently prescribed all the time, but the standard formulations aren’t ideal for every patient. Often, in pediatric patients, a customized dose will be needed in order to maintain effective therapy throughout without the need of additional administration during school hours. Giving pediatric patients high doses of stimulants can cause problems, so a compounded medication is an effective way to maintain ideal drug levels throughout the day.

Autism:
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex condition that can alter nearly every aspect of a patient’s life. It can also be associated with changes throughout the body, related to things like the immune system or metabolism. Medications for Autism can aim to treat many of these associated conditions, like inflammation within the nervous system, metabolic pathway disorders, or behavioral disorders. A commonly used medication for autism is methylcobalamin (a type of Vitamin B12) injection treatment.

Eosinophilic Esophagitis:
Eosinophilic esophagitis is a condition where the esophagus swells up in response to an allergic reaction. While this disease can affect people of all ages, it can be considerably problematic in children. discomfort, nausea, and difficulty swallowing associated with the allergic reaction can prevent children from eating, depriving them of proper nutrition. Choosing to compound a medication of the right dosage form and ingredients can help restore a pediatric patient to a healthy eating behavior.

Nausea/Vomiting:
Children are often prone to experiencing more side effects from common diseases, with nausea/vomiting being common reactions. Due to the nature of these conditions, it can be difficult to administer certain dosages forms such as tablets and bulk solutions. If compounded, these  medications can be administered in convenient dosage forms like transdermal gels, suppositories, and lollipops.

Seizures/AED:
Pediatric seizures are an emergency medical condition that requires immediate and appropriate attention. This means that the prevention of seizures is incredibly important for any patient. Pediatric anticonvulsants and antiepileptics require extremely accurate doses and ideal delivery, because missing a dose could result in a seizure. Choosing to compound one of these medications allows for total control of a patient’s seizure prevention therapy.
