Main:
There are many ways to customize dermatologic medications to best suit patient needs. We can compound medicines so they are hypoallergenic, dye-free or contain only natural products. We can also make them in a variety of forms including sprays, powders, creams, drops, and more.
Acne:
Acne is a condition that occurs when the pores of your skin are blocked by dead skin and oils. Although most common throughout teenage years, people of all ages can experience whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples associated with acne. Compounding opens the doors for medications with unique advantages, strengths and dosage forms. Topical spironolactone for example can treat mild to moderate acne while nicotinamide gel is as effective as commercial clindamycin gel without the risk of antibiotic resistance.
Alopecia:
Hair loss can best frustrating and cause great concern for cosmetic and psychological reasons. Topical melatonin is one option to help prevent and treat hair loss.
Chemical Peels:
Peels can be used for aging spots, diffuse melasma, and lightening other hyperpigmented skin. Kojic, glycolic, and trichloroacetic acids alone or combined are some common medications used.
Diaper Rash:
Also called irritant diaper dermatitis, diaper rash usually occurs with sensitive skin, chafing, and/or infrequent diaper changes. The bottom will have bright red, tender skin that may extend to the genitals and thighs. Cholestyramine cream is one treatment option.
Head Lice and Scabies:
Permethrins are used as standard treatment for treating lice and scabies but have growing resistance and may be harmful to children with multiple uses. Herbal formulations along with oral or topical ivermectin can be compounded as safer alternates.
Molluscum Contagiosum:
Molluscum Contagiosum is a common viral infection that results in dimpled, painless bumps on the skin. The infection is often spread by scratching bumps and spreading the virus to other areas of the skin. Additionally the virus can be spread by person-to-person contact usually between children, but adults with weakened immune systems can also contract the infection. Although the infection usually clears within a year, potassium hydroxide solution of 5-10% can quicken recovery.
Nail Infection/Removal:
The health of a person’s nails is often an indicator of overall health. Various abnormalities are associated with different conditions and deficiencies such as:
- Clubbing-low oxygen levels
- White lines -low serum albumin
- Spoon-like depressions- anemia
- Indentation lines- zinc deficiency
- Pitting or thickening-psoriasis
Treating nail deformities usually takes several weeks to months. For this reason, topical treatment is usually preferred to help avoid toxicities and drug interactions with patients’ current medications.
Pigmentation Abnormalities:
Melasma, Vitiligo, and Lamellar ichthyosis are just a few skin pigmentation disorders that can be treated using compounded medications. Tranexamic acid, kojic acid and hydroquinone cream can be useful for lightening dark since in melasma and can be made into an easily applicable cream. These and many others can be formulated and adjusted to fit each patient’s needs.
Rosacea:
Rosacea is a commonly occurring skin condition characterized by redness, visible blood vessels, and pimples on the face. While there is no cure, there are many treatment options to help reduce symptoms.
Scarring and Keloids:
Scars result from injury to the skin and can range from small, pale lines to raised, discolored masses.They can also cause itching and pain so there are a variety of products to help alleviate these symptoms while also smoothening and lightening the scar. Tea tree oil, coconut, avocado, vitamin A, along with antihistamines, steroids, and others can be formulated into desired the desired combination based on each patient’s skin type and goals of therapy.
Topical Anesthetics:
Common procedures involving injections, cleaning wounds, or placing sutures may require topical anesthetics to keep the patient comfortable. For younger patients with face and scalp lacerations tetracaine, lidocaine, and epinephrine can be used. Similarly a “BLT” of benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine can be used for cosmetic and laser procedures.
Sun Protection/Photoaged Skin/Wrinkles:
Ultraviolet Light (UV) is the primary cause of skin cancer and contributes to skin aging and wrinkles. While sunscreen helps block out UV light, new studies have shown that topical melatonin acts as an antioxidant on the skin to help reduce the mutations that may lead to cancer. Additionally, topical vitamin C, alpha lipoic acid , niacinamide, coenzyme Q10 and others may help with wrinkles and dark spots.
Pruritus:
Itchy skin or pruritus is an unpleasant sensation that causes one to scratch the skin. It can be due to bug bites, dry skin, allergens, healing wounds and other factors. Pramoxine or naloxone topically are unique options for helping alleviate pruritus.
Psoriasis:
Psoriasis is a condition where skin builds up to form scaly patches and dry itchy skin. Different strengths and combinations of vitamin B, coal tar, clobetasol, or methotrexate can be applied topically.
